“七百余年の昔のこと、下関沖の海峡・壇ノ浦で、永らく覇権を争った平家と源氏の最後の合戦が行なわれた。そこで平家は壊滅し、女も子供も、いま安徳天皇として記憶される幼帝もまた亡びた。その海と渚は七百年の間、亡霊に取り憑かれてきた。私は前に別の本で“平家蟹”と呼ばれる壇ノ浦独特の奇態な蟹について述べたことがある。その甲羅には人面が浮かび、平家の武者の亡魂が現れている、と噂されるのだった。［小泉八雲著《怪談》〜〈耳なし芳一の話〉冒頭］
ギター独奏曲「平家蟹」は、ギター＆ヴァイオリン二重奏曲「異人歴程」の最終章から、ふと零れ落ちた後奏曲である。この極小の世界に耳を澄ますと、水泡の底の呟きと共に、喪われた鐘の聲が遠く木霊しているかも知れない。

There the Heike perished utterly, with their women and children, and their infant emperor likewise--now remembered as Antoku Tenno. And that sea and shore have been haunted for seven hundred years... I composed HEIKEOPSIS JAPONICA (HEIKE-GANI) as a postlude for guitar solo. You might listen to echoes, bubbles, murmurs and also faraway sounds of Heike-Biwa from the bottom of the sea in this minimum piece.
